Quarantine Pilot Program Coming to Kings

Last week, Warren County Superintendents with support of the Warren County Educational Service Center, and the Warren County Health District, advocated for students by communicating with Governor DeWine and Ohio Medical Director, Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff to propose an alternative quarantine pilot program for our Warren County schools. This pilot would eliminate the “one size fits all” quarantine guidelines. 

Over the past week, we have seen a significant increase in the number of healthy students that have been quarantined due to being considered a close contact to someone who tested positive for Covid-19.  This is a significant issue among all school leaders and has a tremendous negative impact on families with having to quarantine healthy students as our collaborative desire is to keep students in school.   

Warren County Schools Quarantine Pilot Program
Today, ten Warren County Superintendents, including Kings Superintendent, Greg Sears engaged with the Ohio Department of Health in collaborative conversation regarding the current quarantine protocols. In an effort to be more strategic with the quarantine process, they proposed to develop a testing protocol option that will enable healthy students who are considered close contacts to remain in school. This option for families will be scientific and data-driven to ensure we are keeping healthy students at school and sick students at home. Although the details are not finalized, we are appreciative of the Ohio Department of Health and the Governor’s office for their willingness to listen as we all strive to keep our students in school in a safe manner.   

Late this afternoon, Governor DeWine and Dr. Vanderhoff announced that they are supportive of the alternative to quarantine option pilot program for all Warren County schools to begin later this month. The specifics are not finalized yet but we will be prepared to communicate those when available. However, our current protocols below will continue to remain in place during the pilot:  

  • Pre-K through sixth-grade mask requirement. 
  • Grades 7-12 are strongly recommended to wear a mask.   
  • Current contact tracing and cleaning protocols   

Again, the alternative to quarantine option for families will be communicated when finalized.  

We are thankful for Governor DeWine, Dr. Vanderhoff, and the Ohio Department of Health who took the time to listen to school district superintendents so that we can not only keep schools safe and open but learn to live with the realities of COVID-19.
