Congratulations to J.F. Burns Elementary who has received a three-year renewal on their Purple Star Designation by the Ohio Department of Education. The Purple Star Award for military-friendly schools recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military.

JFB initially completed an application in 2018 that included sending pictures of what activities have taken place at JFB to honor Veterans and their families. The school is very military-friendly. They have several events throughout each year that includes a Veteran's Day parade with nearly 100 Veterans participating, a military care package drive where they send care packages to those currently serving on active duty or attending military academies, and a candy drive where they collect candy to send to the Yellow Ribbon Support Center.

A school is honored with the Purple Star Award if it completes all of the required Military friendly initiatives, plus one optional activity. The Purple Star Advisory Board, formed by the Ohio Department of Education, Higher Education, Veterans Services, and the Adjutant General, helps decide a school’s eligibility for the award.
