KHS 2023 National Merit Commended Scholars Named

KHS National Merit Commended students

Four Kings High School seniors have received a Letter of Commendation from the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. The Commended Students from KHS are Nick Hoying, Kayley Knollman, Ethan Streckfuss, and Dylan Ward. 

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2023 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2022 competition by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT-NMSQT).

A spokesperson from the National Merit organization said, “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.”

Nick is the son of Jody and Matthew Hoying. He plans to study Chemical Engineering and will play football at Bucknell University in the fall. He plays football and lacrosse for Kings and is involved in National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, and the R.A.I.S.E. team. He also works at Chipotle. Nick’s GPA is 4.48.  

Kayley is planning on studying Mechanical Engineering at Vanderbilt University. She has a GPA of 4.52. Kayley is a U.S. National Champion in Dressage, a form of competitive horse riding. She is a member of the Women's STEM Club, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, and Captain of the Math Team. She is the daughter of Kirk Knollman and Rebecca Stromatt.

Ethan is the son of Tanya and Scott Streckfuss. He plans to study Chemical Engineering at either Purdue University or Virginia Tech. He holds a 4.66 GPA. Ethan plays soccer and tennis for Kings. He is also involved in Spanish Club, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, and the R.A.I.S.E. team. Ethan works at Marshall’s and holds a GPA of 4.66. 

Dylan is planning on studying Business at either the University of California, Los Angeles, Notre Dame, or the University of Texas. He has a GPA of 4.51 and is a member of the Men’s Varsity Golf Team and National Honor Society. He also works as a lifeguard. Ethan is the son of Tracy and Ty Ward.
