What is School Counseling all about?

School counselors work with teachers and parents to help students develop socially and emotionally in order to remove any barriers they may have to learning.

What Does a School Counselor Do?

School counselors provide:

  • Classroom lessons teaching social skills, how to take care of strong feelings, study skills, etc.
  • Small group counseling
  • Short-term individual and crisis counseling
  • 504 coordination
  • Consultation with parents and teachers
  • Community resource referrals (including longer term therapy services)
  • School programming, e.g. Veterans Day, The Great Kindness Challenge and Start with Hello

Why would my child need to see a School Counselor?

Children are very resilient but often have not developed the strategies to help them understand and cope cope with feelings or life changes.  School counselors may support students experiencing  sudden changes in mood or behavior or who need support in developing social or coping skills.

How do School Counselors support parents?

School counselors, teachers, and parents work together in the best interests of the students. We can support parents in the following ways:

  • Understanding social or emotional concerns you may have about your child
  • Improve communication between you and your child
  • Understanding family difficulties that can affect your child at school
  • Understanding the developmental changes in your child
  • Discussing concerns about your child's academic performance
  • Helping your child to be on time to school every day

How does my child see the School Counselor?

School counseling is available to all students at KME. We welcome your child to visit the School Counselor. Students can come to the office on their own or through teacher or parent referral. Parent calls and e-mails are always welcome!
